Adobe Photoshop
A popular paint program, commonly refered to as just "Photoshop". The file format for Photoshop files is "psd". Most logo designers use either Photoshop or CorelDraw.

bitmap image
Bitmap images are made up of pixels. The number of pixels used is reflected in the resolution of the image. Also see "vector images" and our article explaining the difference between bitmap and vector images.

CMYK Color
A color model where the color is made up of a mixture of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. The CMYK model is used in 4 color (full color) printing process.
CorelDraw
A popular draw program, commonly refered to as just "Corel". The file format for Corel files is "cdr". Most logo designers use either Corel or Photoshop.

GIF
A common file type for web use. The gif format allows for file compression by reducing the number of colors saved with the image. The gif format is recommended for any image that does not contain gradients. Also see "jpg" and our article outlining the differences between the gif and jpg formats

high resolution
High resolution images are in the 300 dpi or more range. High resolution is used for desktop publishing (like printing your own business cards and letterheads) as well as in CMYK printing.

image resolution
The dpi (dots per inch) of an image. The higher the dpi, the higher the resolution.

JPG
Pronounced "jaypeg". A common file type for web use. Jpg (also typed "jpeg") allows for file compression without too much loss in picture quality. low resolution
When logo designers refer to low resolution images, they usually mean 72 dpi images for web use.

RGB Color
A color model where colors are made up of a mixture of Red, Green and Blue.
The RGB color model is used for web purposes and most on-screen display functions.

SPOT Color
1, 2 and 3 color Pantone inks commonly used in offset printing - which is less expensive than full color (CMYK) printing.

vector image
