Logo Templates: Watch Out For This One!
Logo Templates: "Exclusive Ownership Rights"
Just when you think you've seen it all, you come across this...
I came across this in an order form of a logo design firm that sells logo templates. It looks innocent enough, but think about that one for a minute. What happens if 40 people buy that particular logo at $49.95 and you buy it at $149.95? The design firm would have to contact the other 40 people who have "non-exclusive right to use" your logo and refund them all.
Or something.
What are the chances of that happening?
So how does it work? Simple. The logo design company in question couldn't care. They will sell you the "exclusive rights" to something that other people has the right to use - which makes it non-exclusive. You only think you're getting an exclusive logo.

Well, I decided to email them...
"Your template logos have a price and a unique price. What happens if I want to pay the unique price (which I assume is paying for exclusive rights to the logo) but the template has already been downloaded by someone else? Can I still get exclusive rights to that logo? The one I'm interested in shows 2 downloads.

"Hi Andre
If you purchase the exclusive rights to the logo it means that the logo is immediately removed from the site and you own it to do what ever you want with it - but it does still mean that there has been the 2 downloads..."
Sheesh. This can't be right. Is it just me?
Logo Templates: The Right Way...
There are a couple of logo design firms like Biz-Logo.com and RealEstateLogoDesign.com that sell logo templates and sells each design ONLY ONCE. These template logos are generally referred to as "shelf logos" or "pre-designed logos". Biz-Logo.com sells pre-designed logos for between $95 and $175. Most are around $125. That's pretty cheap for an (truly) exclusive and professionally designed logo, even if you're on a tight budget. The RealEstateLogoDesign.com logos are slightly more expensive at $199.
With both of these options (and with the logos sold on this site), the logo is sold once and with exclusive rights. No "non-exclusive right to use" mumbo jumbo.
